The ‘Otherham’ project ran for six weeks on Thursday evenings as one of Grimm & Co’s Out of Schools programs during the Autumn Term 2024. This project was in partnership with Imitating the Dog, as part of the Children’s Capital of Culture programming for 2025. The overall aim of this project was to work with the young people to create a diverse range of creative writing material which focused on five buildings in Rotherham. Imitating the Dog provided Grimm & Co with the chosen buildings, their new names and information around each of the building’s new reimagined purpose in the world of ‘Otherham’. Following this, each session utilised a range of creative and engaging activities and provocations, to explore each building from different perspectives to support the young people in creating new pieces of writing each week. After completion of the project, Imitating the Dog utilised and took inspiration from the CYP’s writing to create art instillations that were then projected onto the five buildings as part of the Rotherham Winter Lights Festival in January 2025. As well as the six-week project, there was also a one-off session on a Saturday where we invited a younger demographic of young people to engage with the project as well as delivering a song writing session with an Associate Artist including young people completing their Silver Arts Award. This was a great way to provide an opportunity for a wide range of young people in Rotherham to contribute to the content creation of this project. The Otherham project was a great success and true legacy for Rotherham and Children’s Capital of Culture 2025!
